Restart with Brahms

What we’ve all missed for so long is now finally possible again from the start of the new season: symphony concerts with an audience! In the age of Corona, a season opening will naturally look a little different: not all seats will be occupied in the Elbphilharmonie Grand Hall, concerts will only be around an hour long, and most programmes will be performed twice in succession. The new season opening will not be as originally planned – but it will be no less brilliant for it! Chief conductor Alan Gilbert and the NDR Elbphilharmonie Orchestra welcome the audience with a repertoire that – to borrow Beethoven’s words – will go »from heart to heart«: Johannes Brahms’ four symphonies have been a core part of the orchestra’s repertoire ever since it was founded 75 years ago.

Nowhere else do the musicians feel as at home as in this music. And nowhere else do people respond to the famous question »Do you love Brahms?« with such an emphatic »Yes!« as in Hamburg, the city of the composer’s birth. In his debut year with the orchestra, Alan Gilbert proved – with captivating interpretations of two Brahms symphonies – how deeply connected he feels to these works. He now completes the quartet and conducts all four symphonies over four nights. Each of these masterpieces of the Romantic symphony repertoire are thrillingly contrasted with a violin concerto by Sergei Prokofiev.
