Philharmonic Chamber Music Concert
Rossini / Boccherini / Mozart
The one-act opera »Il signor Bruschino« from the pen of the 21-year-old Rossini caused a scandal at its 1813 premiere in Venice, not least due to the special use of the strings as percussion. Before this, the young composer wrote a cycle of sonatas »a quattro«, an impressive stroke of inspiration that pays tribute to the idols of his youth, Haydn and Mozart.
Of Boccherini’s 125 string quintets, only three feature a part for double bass. They were written in 1787 at the court of Charles III in Madrid, and boast a wealth of original ideas and effects.
Mozart’s famous String Quintet in g minor brings this chamber concert to an end. Written around the same time as his opera »Don Giovanni«, the quintet, too, shows the composer struggling with the dark side of human existence, from deep sorrow through subliminal agitation to outbursts of despair: a true creative masterpiece!
