Description

»He is so real« – this is what Bostonians say about the popular principal conductor of the venerable Boston Symphony Orchestra. Real – one little word with a lot of content: he is honest, authentic and approachable. Andris Nelsons is truly a phenomenon: his capacity for enthusiasm is legendary, he is a brilliant conductor, and his work schedule borders on the superhuman. In the 2018/19 season, the Latvian top conductor can be seen and heard on the Elbphilharmonie rostrum several times.

Nelsons is currently recording all symphonies by Dmitri Shostakovich in a long-term collaboration with the symphony orchestra from Boston. On the programme in the Elbphilharmonie Grand Hall tonight is the monumental – and rather eventful – Fourth Symphony: Shostakovich, who suffered under Stalin’s regime for some of his life, recalled the symphony’s world premiere in 1936 for unknown reasons. It was later premiered in Moscow in 1961.
