Fascinating Finland

Susanne Kujala is a German organist living in Finland. She has made a name for herself with many first performances, but she also focuses on playing Bach and music by Romantic composers. Ms Kujala has used these ingredients to create an unusual programme for her recital at the Elbphilharmonie.

Bach is the centrepiece of course, with the majestic Prelude in E flat major, Bach’s homage to the divine Trinity, and two filigree trio sonatas. Bach remains the theme in Max Reger’s titanic Homage to Bach, which he distilled from the four letters B-A-C-H (in English notation: B flat-A-C-B), and the concert is completed by Finnish organ music: fascinating musical worlds from the pen of Maija Hynninen, and a new work by Susanne Kujala’s husband, the accordionist and composer Veli Kujala.
