Description

»A musical journey offering glimpses into the music of the French Beethoven, Italian Romanticism and the French music of the twentieth century. Bottesini gained a name for himself as a double bass virtuoso and a composer at an early age. His String Quintet is a rarity from the Romantic movement.

Milhaud’s passion for travel comes through clearly in his Second Quintet. His style is influenced by the music of various countries, from Brazilian folk music to American jazz. Our concert closes with George Onslow’s String Quintet No. 15, ›The Bullet‹. He is known by many as the ›French Beethoven‹: not only did Onslow follow the style of Viennese classicism, he was, like Beethoven, also deaf. Onslow’s deafness was caused by a bullet that had become lodged in his neck in a hunting accident – it was impossible to operate and the bullet was never removed. Onslow was already working on the quintet when the incident happened, so he gave each movement in ›The Bullet‹ a special appellation: Pain, Fever and Delirium, Convalescence and Recovery.« (Franziska Kober)
