Description

»The early career of the British composer Edmondstoune Duncan was somewhat of a joke among England’s high society in the late nineteenth century, and he would later abandon these efforts. But his love for poetry and musical artistry characterised by sincerity have been preserved for us in numerous masses, operas, songs, chamber music pieces and books (from ›The Story of the Carol‹ to the ›Encyclopaedia of Musical Terms‹).

This performance of his Quintet is a rare chance to hear one of these remarkable and unique pieces. The Rimsky-Korsakov Quintet that follows dates from a period of creative drought. It fell flat at a competition, yet it quickly gained favour among the public thereafter. Beethoven’s classic style meets typically Russian compositional techniques in the piece. The concert is brought to a close with Swiss composer Hans Huber’s Quintet, which was, after its premiere in the early twentieth century, hailed by the ›Neue Zürcher Zeitung‹ as ›masterful‹, and described as having ›a fresh, powerful and youthful buoyancy‹ and a ›deeper meaning‹.« (Pascal Deuber)
