Description

Hardly any other composer has had such close ties to the city of Hamburg as Georg Philipp Telemann. The great Baroque master worked on the banks of the Elbe River for nearly 50 years, was director of the opera house for a while, and penned countless sacred works as cantor of the city’s principal churches. He was also extremely productive in the field of instrumental music, with over a thousand pieces to his credit: a small impression of these is afforded by the orchestral suite heard in this concert. Perfect for Telemann’s music, the recently-formed »NDR Barock« is made up of members of the NDR Elbphilharmonie Orchestra committed to historically informed performance practice. In today’s concert they are joined on stage by guest musicians. The programme also features Beethoven’s grandiose Seventh Symphony, in which the composer abandons himself entirely to the power of rhythm. In the second half of the concert, the NDR Elbphilharmonie Orchestra returns to its full size under the baton of Thomas Hengelbrock.
