Description

»Fast, faster, Grubinger« – NDR (North German Radio) invented a new superlative last year when Martin Grubinger made the Elbphilharmonie tremble with the drum beats and rolls of his Percussive Planet Ensemble. This remarkable percussionist now returns to the river Elbe with »Sieidi«, a concerto composed by Kalevi Aho in 2010. The Finnish composer named the work after the sacred sites of the indigenous Sámi people of North Finland, where they gave thanks and offerings to the spirits. Reminiscent of an ancient ritual, with this concerto Martin Grubinger once again demonstrates the diversity of his instrumentarium.

How felicitous, then, that another expert for complex rhythms steps onto the rostrum in front of the Gothenburg Symphony Orchestra, in the shape of young Finnish talent Santtu-Matias Rouvali. The principal conductor of the top Swedish orchestra, born in 1985, used to be a percussionist himself before he swapped his drumsticks for a conductor’s baton.

From his homeland, Rouvali brings Sibelius’s legendary tone poem »Finlandia« and Fifth Symphony with him to Hamburg.
