Description

To mark György Ligeti’s 100th birthday, Ensemble 13/14 from the Hochschule für Musik und Theater Hamburg, where Ligeti taught for many years, perform some of the composer’s best chamber music works. The concert opens with his Concerto for Violin and Orchestra, which blends Hungarian and Bulgarian dance melodies with medieval and Renaissance sounds. Afterwards, the young musicians perform the »Hamburg Concerto« for Solo Horn and Chamber Orchestra, in which Ligeti experiments with unusual, non-harmonic sound spectrums. The final piece of the evening is a four-movement chamber concerto, which – in contrast to the typical division of soloist and ensemble – was written for thirteen soloists. It forms the perfect end to the anniversary of a remarkable composer who was a pioneer and influential figure in New Music during his life and beyond.
