»This organ can do everything!« raves the Elbphilharmonie’s titular organist Iveta Apkalna about her »godchild«. Indeed, the instrument is not only seamlessly integrated optically into the concert hall, its 4,765 pipes, ranging in length from one centimetre to ten metres, afford the player a wealth of tones on the four manuals. It’s no wonder that organists from all over the world are queued up.
Frenchman Thierry Escaich, also known for his compositions, is one of these organists. In his concert, the chorales by Bach and Brahms are reflected in his own pieces and improvisations.
Swede Hans-Ola Ericsson connects Johann Sebastian Bach with Olivier Messiaen and his own pieces for the organ and electronics. This promises to be an unusually exciting event.
Canadian musician Isabelle Demers has spun together a distinct programme for the Elbphilharmonie’s Venice Festival with works by »adopted« Venetians Gabrieli, Albinoni, Wagner and Stravinsky.
The finale of the subscription series is taken over by Iveta Apkalna – who performs two additional special concerts – with a programme centred around Ligeti’s epochal »Volumina« as part of the Hamburg International Music Festival.
