Lieder Recital
Song in its Purest Form
Orpheus, the famed figure from classical mythology, is regarded by many as the first singer of all time. His voice tamed wild animals; it even appeased the furies and the gods of the underworld. Admittedly, one should not expect such miracles from the lieder recitals in the Elbphilharmonie Recital Hall. But the voices heard there will undoubtedly also touch our innermost feelings with this purist of all vocal art forms.
To guarantee this, great performers with highly contrasting programmes have been invited. For example, soprano Marlis Petersen juxtaposes fragrant French art songs with the rhapsodic lieder of Richard Strauss.
Countertenor Andreas Scholl presents a selection of British music by Purcell, while baritone Matthias Goerne turns Schubert’s »Winter Journey« into a live installation, together with South African artist William Kentridge. Soprano Anna Prohaska commemorates the end of World War 1, one hundred years ago, with songs by Schumann, Ives, Eisler and Weill.
In the final concert, Marianne Crebassa presents French songs together with pianist and composer Fazıl Say who also brings along selections of his own music.
