Description

Robert Schumann, as a failed pianist and successful composer, had a particularly high opinion of song as an art form: »It really is a totally different sort of music, one that isn't expressed first through the fingers, but which is much more direct and melodic.« Indeed, what is more personal than the human voice, which comes directly out of us, transforming the body into an instrument? Four of today´s most outstanding vocalists present song recitals in this season.

The works of Schumann act as a leitmotiv running through the season. Czech singer and current artist-in-residence, Magdalena Kožená, opens the series together with celebrated pianist Dame Mitsuko Uchida. English tenor Mark Padmore, praised for his clear diction and dramatic intensity, performs Schumann’s »Dichterliebe.« Florian Boesch also includes Schumann in his recital, which includes the recitation of Heine poems by Thomas Quasthoff. And in conclusion, famed baritone Thomas Hampson performs a song recital with a colourful programme, tailor-made for the International Musikfest Hamburg.
