Mahler Chamber Orchestra / Kian Soltani / Gianandrea Noseda
Mendelssohn Bartholdy: The Hebrides / Haydn: Cello Concerto in C major / Schumann: Symphony No. 2
With cellist Kian Soltani, clarinettist Martin Fröst and conductor Sir Simon Rattle, this subscription series features three key artists. They are flanked by outstanding orchestras, playing both repertoire favourites and new discoveries
Subscription 2 brings together two of the best orchestras in Germany, or indeed the world: the Staatskapelle Berlin and the BR Symphony Orchestra under their respective chief conductors Christian Thielemann and Sir Simon Rattle. Both look into otherworldly spheres in their programmes, with Brahms’s »German Requiem« and Mahler’s »Resurrection Symphony«. The series opens with two top soloists, Kian Soltani (cello) and Martin Fröst (clarinet), performing repertoire favourites for their instruments. They are both accompanying the current season as Artists in Residence. The dynamic Mahler Chamber Orchestra also has secret residency status with a total of four concerts. The Israel Philharmonic Orchestra makes its debut at the Elbphilharmonie. And for the final concert of the subscription series, Semyon Bychkov and »his« world-class Czech orchestra perform the concert version of Stravinsky’s neoclassical ballet »Pulcinella«.
