Arvo Pärt 90: Iveta Apkalna, organ
Works by Arvo Pärt, J.S. Bach and Pēteris Vasks
Spotlight on the Grand Hall’s centrepiece
The Elbphilharmonie organ is not only an integral component of the Grand Hall’s architecture, but it is also a firm feature of the musical programme. Titular organist Iveta Apkalna takes to the keys twice this season, with music from her Baltic homeland included. »TikTok organist« Anna Lapwood performs film music, Christian Schmitt pays tribute to the Romantic period and Bernard Foccroulle juxtaposes Johann Sebastian Bach with the Franco-Flemish tradition. Finally, the organ literally takes off when Mari Fukumoto presents a version of Gustav Holst’s orchestral work »The Planets«.
