The first note should be an enticement to the audience.
Modern sound worlds, exotic instruments and music beyond the pale of the familiar: people attending the »Greatest Hits« festival at Kampnagel and the Elbphilharmonie from 1 to 4 November had the chance to experience the whole gamut of contemporary music. As the Elbphilharmonie’s current Artist in Residence, Peter Eötvös opened the festival with the Klangforum Wien and three sensuous and vivid works.
The Klangforum Wien, consisting of 24 musicians from 10 different countries, has set itself the goal of getting people interested in contemporary music. With Eötvös on the conductor’s rostrum, they created floating islands of sound, leading the audience on a trip through eerie realms of the shades, Far Eastern rituals and reminiscences of the Baroque.
The members of Florence’s music research centre »Tempo Reale« presented their comical »musical theatre for household equipment«, in which electrical household devices form an orchestra with a most unusual sound.
Day two of the festival saw the arrival of a whole fleet of exotic instruments, designed by the visionary composer, musical inventor and loner Harry Partch (d. 1974).
The Cologne-based Ensemble Musikfabrik was responsible for building the first and only copies of Partch’s unique instruments a few years ago.
Danish composer and installation artist Simon Steen-Andersen and the musician and producer Helge Sten from Norway both wrote works specifically for performance on Partch instruments.
The audience had trouble staying seated during the performance of Phillip Sollmann’s »Monophonie«! The DJ and techno producer’s one-hour work was likewise composed for Harry Partch’s acoustic instruments. Pulsating waves of sound and gripping, infectious beats!
