Gamelan music, from the Indonesian islands of Bali and Java, is many centuries old. It’s played on gongs, metallophones, drums, xylophones, flutes and string instruments – and always with an emphasis on community. The meditative sound has fascinated composers such as Claude Debussy, and still has many fans in Europe to this day. The Elbphilharmonie has its own special collection of beautiful gamelan instruments, which you can explore in this workshop.
