Lost in Vienna, 1827: cold weather, solitude, aimless wandering – Schubert’s song cycle »Winterreise« (A Winter’s Journey) is a product of ›inner emigration‹. At the time, Vienna was a police state with a prospering economy; the population was growing, while the suburbs were sinking into poverty. This seminar takes a closer look at the circumstances in which »Winterreise« was written, at the history of its reception and its outstanding importance.
