»Weinberg’s music opens up worlds to the listener that speak of human experiences and much more, and which, above all, are deeply moving. That is what makes them true masterpieces to me.« Right at the start of her international career, the Lithuanian conductor Mirga Gražinytė-Tyla attracted attention with performances and recordings of works by Mieczysław Weinberg and played a key role in the rediscovery of the Polish composer. His opera »The Passenger« – which Shostakovich described as a »masterfully accomplished work« – deals powerfully with the Holocaust and the repression of the post-war era.

»I have known for several years now that Weinberg is part of my life’s work. And yet I am speechless with amazement every single time I get to really delve into one of his works and hear everything that lies within it and what a gift this music is,« says the conductor. It was not until 2010 that the opera, which was banned by Soviet censors when it was written in the 1960s, received its staged premiere in Bregenz. And it made a resounding impact: the story of a concentration camp guard who emigrates to Brazil in 1960 and is haunted by her past during the crossing has impressed and overwhelmed audiences ever since.

The music is rich in references to European classical music, dances and folk music, which merge with Weinberg’s modern musical language to form a multifaceted cosmos. Mirga Gražinytė-Tyla brought this cosmos to the opera stage in Madrid in 2024 and is now coming to Hamburg with the singers from that production and the world-class City of Birmingham Orchestra, of which she was principal conductor until 2022.
