A different league
The French pianist Hélène Grimaud once said that »Robert Schumann’s piano concerto is probably the most tender, tricky and special of all piano concertos«. Schumann, who disliked tonal effects and empty virtuosity, composed a work in which symphonic density and true introspection was prioritised over superficial brilliance. Schumann tightly interwove the solo and orchestral parts, thereby breaking new ground in 1845 with his only piano concerto.
