All ears?

Under the baton of its new principal conductor François-Xavier Roth, the SWR Symphonieorchester juxtaposes two revolutionary composers: Ludwig van Beethoven and Helmut Lachenmann. The former was a giant of Viennese classical music, the latter a pioneer of post-war noise music. Both broke musical boundaries with their works and challenged their audience’s listening habits. Although Lachenmann, who turned 90 in November, strikes a very different note from Beethoven, he clearly follows in his footsteps as a rebel and free spirit: »Beethoven was the first composer who deliberately stopped writing music to please the ears!«
