In 1874 Modest Mussorgsky went to an exhibition of pictures and architectural and costume drawings by his friend Viktor Hartmann, who had recently died. These inspired Mussorgsky to compose one of the most important piano cycles of all music history: »Pictures at an Exhibition«. Stephan König gives us this remarkable piano work in a modern jazz version, containing Mussorgsky’s original piano part, but with rhythmic grooves from the bass and percussion, and virtuoso jazz improvisation.
