Reckoning with the dictatorship

»Most of my symphonies are tombstones«, Dmitri Shostakovich once said. And what else can one expect from a composer who not only lived through two world wars, but also spent half his life submitting to pressure from the Stalin dictatorship? Who constantly had to adapt his artistic creativity to the ideology of the Soviet regime? Just a few months after Stalin's death in 1953, Shostakovich, working quickly as ever, dashed off his Tenth Symphony. It can be seen as a personal settling of scores with the regime, and, like its predecessors, is full of encoded autobiographical messages. Polish newcomer Michał Nesterowicz, popular with audiences and musicians alike, conducts Shostakovich's masterpiece tonight in the concert series »Klassik Kompakt«.
