Vibrant Colours

This concert is bursting with colour and sonic power: with Modest Mussorgsky’s »Pictures at an Exhibition«, the Munich Philharmonic has set out to create a musical gallery of the very highest order. The programme also features Shostakovich’s characteristically ironic and grotesque Violin Concerto No. 1, with Janine Jansen as soloist.

The two composers share a close connection, even though they never met. Shostakovich admired the stark and uncompromising tone of Mussorgsky’s compositions and arranged some of his unfinished works. Although his musical language sounds distinctly more modern, Shostakovich adopted the penchant for the whimsical, which also shines through time and again in his Violin Concerto.

Without the help of friends and admirers, Mussorgsky’s work would probably have been largely forgotten. It was only the many arrangements and completions of his works that brought him great posthumous fame. His by far best-known composition, »Pictures at an Exhibition«, in which he paints gnomes, witches and the imposing »Great Gate of Kyiv« with sound, became a true box-office hit thanks to the colourful arrangement by the impressionist Maurice Ravel.
