Description

Work by work, Swiss artist Zimoun arranges hundreds of identical elements into a single sound sculpture until the space itself begins to come alive in a complex ballet of simplicity. At »Elbphilharmonie Visions«, he transfers the essence of this process to an orchestra for the first time, alongside a new installation in the Recital Hall: 40 double bass players from the NDR ensembles and guests from across Germany. Conducted by Alan Gilbert, this sonic organism plays with opposites such as routine and chance, repetition and variation, order and chaos, precision and imperfection. Afterwards, composer Thomas Cornelius – who, as the Elbphilharmonie’s resident organist, knows its magnificent organ better than almost anyone – takes what has gone before as the starting point for his new work »Refractions«. Drawing on its sonic impulses, he develops them further and allows new musical spaces of his own to emerge.
