The Philharmonia Orchestra from London can be relied on to provide magic moments at the Elbphilharmonie, and all the moreso when charismatic conductor Esa-Pekka Salonen is on the rostrum. Now the dream team returns to Hamburg once more.

They bring with them the pianist Yefim Bronfman, who is admired all over the world. Born in Uzbekistan in 1958, he enjoyed a rapid rise as a child prodigy, and was playing Rachmaninov's First Piano Concerto aged only twelve. Tonight he contributes Beethoven's Piano Concerto No. 3, with which the composer emancipated himself from his teacher Joseph Haydn.

At the very top of Esa-Pekka Salonen's personal hit list is the music of his Finnish countryman Jean Sibelius. He loves conducting Sibelius's scores with their austere Scandinavian atmosphere, which, incidentally, make a perfect match for the weather in Hamburg!
