The art of improvisation
Claude Debussy is said to have regularly told his students that they should try to forget that the piano has hammers. His Preludes are an impressive expression of that demand. They aren’t only mood pieces: each one is a soaring, iridescent highlight of French Impressionism. Colin Matthews’ clever orchestration shows off Debussy’s musical brushstrokes even more wonderfully in all the colours of the rainbow.
In terms of colour, pianist and composer Brad Mehldau is impossible to pigeonhole. His genre-transcending approach integrates jazz, Romanticism, country, film music, pop and Johann Sebastian Bach, putting its own unique and sophisticated stamp on everything.
