To honour Ravi Shankar on his 100th birthday

It has never been easy to be the daughter of the country's most famous musician. But Anoushka Shankar, daughter of the legendary sitar virtuoso, composer, teacher and cultural ambassador Ravi Shankar, carries on her famous father's legacy in her own remarkable way. To mark the occasion of his 100th birthday, she devotes an entire concert to his memory as part of her »Reflektor« festival. Together with musical companions and erstwhile pupils, she illuminates his services to classic Indian music. Tonight's programme features ragas from both the Carnatic tradition of southern India and the Hindustani school of northern India, pieces that Ravi Shankar either composed himself or helped make popular.

Like her famous father, Anoushka Shankar sees herself as a builder of bridges between East and West. As one of today's best sitar players, she carries the traditional sounds of the subcontinent out into the world. And with the same commitment, the six-time Grammy-nominated cosmopolitan seeks the exchange with distant cultures and styles. She appears with the Berlin Philharmonic as well as with American DJs and British folk musicians; she has been in the studio alongside George Harrison, Sting and her half-sister Norah Jones; and she has initiated breathtaking encounters between Indian classical music and flamenco, jazz, pop, film music and electronica. Her »Reflektor« weekend, where she curates the programme herself, brings many of these different facets to the Elbphilharmonie.
