Vision of the future

She is a rapper, producer and Professor of Music at the distinguished Brown University in the USA: Enongo Lumumba-Kasongo, better known as Sammus, is one of the most important contemporary voices of Afrofuturism. Born in New York State, she studied and earned her doctorate at Cornell University, which forms a part of the »Ivy League« stateside. She has released several albums and singles, as well as collaborating with a host of artists on projects involving music, film, podcasts and computer games.

The day before, Sammus performs live as a rapper on the M.Bassy stage. Click here for more details.

She is also in demand as a speaker with a gift for »getting a message across«, as the Los Angeles Times puts it. In her 90-minute interactive lecture at the Elbphilharmonie Kaistudio, she introduces the audience to Afrofuturism, walking them through its origins and impact on society, culture and politics, including the question: How do we create a world that is free of oppression and exploitation? Towards the end, things gets creative: Based on the ideas and outcomes of the discussion, participants create their very own vibes with language and sound. No prior knowledge is necessary and everyone is welcome. The event is in English.
