Kirill Gerstein is one of today's best-known pianists. The American musician was born in the former Soviet Union, and now lives in Berlin. Thus his intelligent interpretations combine the Russian, American and Central European traditions of music-making. To celebrate the Elbphilharmonie's fifth anniversary, Gerstein returned to Hamburg on 11 and 12 January 2022 to present the latest, highly acclaimed piano concerto of British composer Thomas Adès, accompanied by the NDR Elbphilharmonie Orchestra. In this podcast, the pianist talks about the concerto and about his close relationship with Adès – in perfect German.

5 years of the Elbphilharmonie

It's now more than five years since the Elbphilharmonie opened its doors to widespread acclaim. The anniversary was celebrated for a whole week around the the actual birthday on 11 January 2022 – in both the Grand Hall and the Recital Hall, with Hamburg orchestras and famous outside guests like Sir Simon Rattle, the London Symphony Orchestra and jazz legend Charles Lloyd. The festival concert on 11 January was broadcast live on the Elbphilharmonie Mediathek.
