»From the New World« with Manfred Honeck

The NDR Elbphilharmonie Orchestra plays Dvořák’s much-loved Ninth Symphony and celebrates the debut of the young star violinist María Dueñas.

Only 18 years old, and she is already taking the world’s concert halls by storm: Spanish violinist María Dueñas. »She captivates the audience from the very first notes,« as one enthusiastic reviewer put it. She now follows her acclaimed debut with the San Francisco Symphony Orchestra with her first appearance together with the NDR Elbphilharmonie Orchestra. On the rostrum: Manfred Honeck, principal conductor of the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra, who will be giving several concerts this year featuring the exciting young violinist.

A true evergreen from the violin repertoire is on the programme of their Hamburg concert: Max Bruch’s famous Violin Concerto No. 1, whose memorable tunes and enthralling virtuosity outshadow everything else written by this German Romantic composer. Familiar melodies also abound in Dvořák’s Symphony No. 9, »From the New World«. As the newly-appointed director of the National Conservatory of Music of America in New York, the Czech composer conquered music lovers’ hearts all over the world in 1883 with the work that became known as the »New World Symphony«. There are few symphonies that enjoy such popularity today as Dvořák’s Ninth.

»This fellow has more ideas than all of us. Any other composer could assemble his main themes from what Dvořák throws in the wastepaper basket.«
