Elbphilharmonie Hilfsfonds Vol. II None

Further Coronavirus Support for Freelance Musicians

The Elbphilharmonie Support Fund was set up in April 2020 and has been used to provide quick and efficient help for freelance musicians directly affected by event cancellations in the Elbphilharmonie and the Laeiszhalle during the first coronavirus lockdown. The »lockdown light« introduced across Germany at the beginning of November forced the Elbphilharmonie and Laeiszhalle to close their doors again from 3 November. HamburgMusik gGmbH has therefore set up another support fund.

The fund supports independent, freelance musicians and stage artists of any nationality who would have been involved in an individual or cooperation event by HamburgMusik gGmbH that was cancelled as a result of the coronavirus situation. As a municipal operating company with relatively restrictive specifications for fee negotiations, the artist agreements of HamburgMusik gGmbH do not allow for cancellation fees in cases of a cancelled event. Money from the Support Fund is therefore used to pay financial compensation of 65 percent of the original fee. Where an event has been postponed, rather than cancelled, the artist is not eligible for this support.

No support can be provided to employed members of orchestras/ensembles under public sponsorship.

Examples of Support

An internationally renowned string quartet would have received a fee of €9,000 for a performance in the Elbphilharmonie – the Support Fund was used to pay a cancellation fee of €5,850, which corresponds to €1,462.50 per person.

As part of the »Reflektor Anoushka Shankar« festival in November, some musicians would have travelled from India, where no financial support is offered by the state. These musicians can now also be offered an appropriate cancellation fee from the fund.

A Hamburg beatboxing artist who would have had work for an eight-day production period as part of a major music theatre project for children lost his main source of income for the month. It is possible to pay 65 percent of the agreed fee for the cancelled work.
