The Grand Hall of the Elbphilharmonie seats around 2,100 guests in an extraordinary atmosphere. Designed in the »vineyard« style, the audience seating surrounds the stage in ascending rows. The acoustics of the hall are especially suitable for concerts with large orchestras.
In its standard set-up, the hall has a capacity of 2,073 guests. For performances with larger choirs, singers can be accommodated directly behind the stage in Audience Area G, which reduces the audience capacity by 78 seats.Seating Plan Grand Hall (1.6 MB)
In concerts with smaller instrumentation, the rear part of the stage can be filled with 94 extra seats to form Audience Area H. Performances using a hanging rear wall and a PA system directed from the stage into the audience areas reduce the capacity to approximately 1,555 guests.
Stage and Rigging
The stage has 31 electrically operated, height-adjustable platforms that cover the stage area in a semicircle and allow various stage levels, depending on requirements. The total area of the stage is about 260 square metres and the actual playable area measures approximately 18 x 15 metres (l x b).
The backstage area is located at stage level on the 12th floor and includes 8 artists’ dressing rooms with private bathrooms as well as a cafeteria that also serves as an artists’ lounge. On the 11th floor is the orchestra area, equipped with four group changing rooms and eight warm-up rooms. Another warm-up room, which can also be used as a production office, is located on the 12th floor.
Foyer spaces connected to various areas of the Grand Hall contain cloakrooms on the 11th floor and bars on floors 12, 13, 15 and 16. All foyer spaces offer spectacular views of the city of Hamburg to the north and of the port to the south. Concertgoers make their way to the foyer areas via the Elbphilharmonie Plaza.
The Recital Hall of the Elbphilharmonie is designed as a multipurpose space. Equipped with a mobile auditorium and stage elements, the space offers a variety of configurations.
Capacity, Stage and Rigging
In the standard configuration with extended seating and a stage measuring 14.5 x 6.3 metres (l x b), the Recital Hall has a total capacity of 526 people. With a larger stage size of 14.5 x 11.8 metres (l x b), the space seats 388 guests.
With audience seating completely removed and stage elements lowered to ground level, the base area of the hall measures 435 square metres (14.5 x 30 m, l x b).
For a banquet or a ball configuration, 240 places at tables can be accommodated, leaving room for a dance floor measuring approximately 14.5 x 6.3 metres (l x b) in size at ground level.
The backstage area contains two artists’ rooms with private bathrooms as well as two group dressing rooms. A further backstage room is equipped to accommodate a temporary kitchen for serving prepared catering.
The foyer space of the Recital Hall is accessible via the Elbphilharmonie Plaza and is located on the 10th floor at hall level. A cloakroom and bar are located side by side, with spectacular views of the city of Hamburg.
