Since the first season at the Elbphilharmonie, Hamburg-based photographer Peter Hundert has had the chance to collect pictures and sound recordings first-hand at numerous shows, rehearsals and soundchecks, enabling him to compile a highly authentic and intimate record of day-to-day goings-on at the Elbphilharmonie.
The book contains portraits of world stars such as Teodor Currentzis, Gustavo Dudamel, Patricia Kopatchinskaja, Daniil Trifonov, Steve Reich and John Malkovich, as well as ensembles like the Concertgebouw Orchestra and the Mahler Chamber Orchestra. Outstanding bands such as The National and Kings of Convenience are likewise accommodated, as well as jazz legend Chick Corea, neo-classical artist Nils Frahm and Laurie Anderson, icon of the New York avant-garde.
However, Hundert doesn't distinguish between international stars, window cleaners and Elbphilharmonie staff in his photography. On the contrary, his aim was to portray the many different individuals that make the »Elbphilharmonie miracle« possible from day to day.
Alan Gilbert, the new principal conductor of the NDR Elbphilharmonie Orchestra, and Bryce Dessner, composer and lead guitarist with The National, also contribute truly interesting articles in which they describe their own personal view of the Elbphilharmonie.
