The 2018 Elbphilharmonie Summer Festival offers a varied mix of concerts in the Grand Hall until the end of August – the programme ranges from symphony orchestras to electro bands. We have put together the festival highlights for you:

5 Aug 2018 / Orchestra of the Americas

With tropical temperatures outside, the Latin American musicians of The Orchestra of the Americas, with Gabriela Montero at the piano and Carlos Miguel Prieto on the conductor's rostrum, almost felt at home, filling the Elbphilharmonie Grand Hall with vivacity.

Warm summery feelings were also conjured up in the Grand Hall by the Taksim Trio, the band Get Well Soon and Arturo O'Farrill with his Afro Latin Jazz Ensemble.

This summer in Hamburg is a real surprise. Every other time I've been here, I needed gloves, a hat and good spirits.

I love songs in any weather: winter, summer, spring or autumn, it's all the same to me. I just love music.

8 Aug 2018: António Zambujo

Lost love, separation and yearning, patriotic pride and tragic dignity are the subject matter of the Portuguese genre fado. António Zambujo takes the traditional music style and combines it with the »Cante Alentejano« from his home in the south of Portugal, and with Brazilian pop music.

18 Aug 2018 / Der Rosenkavalier

The 1926 premiere of the silent film »Der Rosenkavalier« after Richard Strauss's opera of the same name was a resounding success. Richard Strauss himself wrote some of the soundtrack, while the script came from the pen of Hugo von Hofmannsthal, who had already written the opera libretto. For a long time, dubbing problems and a missing reel of film prevented the movie from being screened. But in 2006 a restored version was produced – the version of the film that was also shown at the Elbphilharmonie. Members of the Berlin Philharmonic under the baton of Raphael Haeger performed the music.

To my mind, a fine summer's day should feature a wonderful early sunrise, a hot afternoon, then later on a heavy thunderstorm.

Raphael Haeger (Dirigent / conductor)

I always try to provide my own motivation and to maintain a good mood. Sometimes a good book helps, a good film or record – but above all, my wife Valentina.

Stefano Bollani

29 Aug 2018 / Stefano Bollani

Stefano Bollani, who was born in Milan in 1972 and grew up in Florence, can't be described as a pure jazz pianist: his readings of Gershwin and Ravel, Stravinsky and even Frank Zappa are in no way inferior to the fine modern jazz he plays. On stage he is imaginative and lively with an ever-present sense of humour. At the Elbphilharmonie Summer Festival Bollani and his four-man band presented his programme »Napoli Trip«.
