Mariss Jansons and his »Rolls Royce« of an orchestra performed in the Grand Hall just a few weeks after the Elbphilharmonie’s official opening. On 14 January 2018 the conductor, who has directed the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra for many years now, celebrates his 75th birthday.
»This orchestra can do just about anything«, Jansons says himself: the Munich-based orchestra is considered one of the best in the world. Jansons refused to be robbed of a special birthday present: to conduct in the Elbphilharmonie Grand Hall on the eve of his birthday.
On the programme: no less than Richard Strauss’s tone poem »Also sprach Zarathustra« (Thus Spoke Zarathustra) inspired by Nietzsche and Prokofiev’s most well-known and powerful symphony, his Fifth.
