Angélique Kidjo in the Grand Hall

The African superstar in the Elbphilharmonie.

Video available until 08 Dec 2019

Angélique Kidjo from Benin is a leading figure of Afrobeat and remains unpredictable. As the successor to Miriam Makeba, Kidjo has transformed herself from the femme fatale of Afro funk to the new Mama Africa. In her current programme, she reinvents the Talking Heads album »Remain in Light« from 1980. With her adaptation of this new wave classic, Kidjo established links between the voodoo cult practised by her ancestors and the urban jungle of the Big Apple, adding African sayings and Afrobeat grooves to the texts of Talking Heads founder David Byrne. It was in the early nineties when Angélique Kidjo became one of the most conspicuous figures of the early world music scene with her extravagant stage costumes.
