Alan Gilbert and Frank Peter Zimmermann

The New Viennese School with Anton Webern and Alban Berg meets its great predecessor, Johannes Brahm

Video available until 02 Mar 2021

On the threshold separating the Romantic era from the 20th century, chief conductor Alan Gilbert performs pieces by Alban Berg and Anton Webern together with Brahms's Third Symphony. A work, to quote Clara Schumann, marked by both »poetry« and a »mysterious magic«. With this score, Brahms paved the way for his successors.

Anton Webern's orchestral idyll »Im Sommerwind« still breathes unmistakeably the atmosphere of Romanticism, while the twelve-tone Violin Concerto by Alban Berg, »Dem Andenken eines Engels«, is likewise one of the best-known and most heart-rending works of its time. Alan Gilbert is supported in the Berg by the exceptional violinist Frank Peter Zimmermann.
