5 Years of Elbphilharmonie 5 years ago the Elbphilharmonie opened its doors – it’s time to celebrate! From 9–17 January with Simon Rattle, Iveta Apkalna, Charles Lloyd and many more.

Happy Birthday, Elbphilharmonie!

The Elbphilharmonie Hamburg celebrated the fifth anniversary of its opening on 11 January 2022. Admittedly a modest anniversary, but there is always a reason to celebrate! After all, the Elbphilharmonie proves evening after evening that the live experience of music surrounded by impressive architecture can inspire anyone and everyone, and can also influence the character of an entire city.

With the Elbphilharmonie, Hamburg has earned a global reputation as a distinguished city of culture. In January, that was celebrated with a concert series that perfectly reflected the diversity and quality of the venue’s programme – the guest list included great names such as Sir Simon Rattle, Daniel Barenboim, Jordi Savall, Charles Lloyd, John Scofield and many more. You can still experience the birthday concert of 11 January with the NDR Elbphilharmonie Orchestra under Alan Gilbert as a video on demand.

And the celebrations are far from over: the Elbphilharmonie’s understanding of culture is far broader than just music, as demonstrated by the light artwork »Breaking Waves« by the internationally acclaimed Studio DRIFT. They will be lighting up the concert hall in spectacular style from 28 April to 1 May for the opening of the Hamburg International Music Festival. The installation is supported by the Freundeskreis Elbphilharmonie + Laeiszhalle e.V.. The Museum für Kunst und Gewerbe Hamburg (MK&G) dedicates a four-month exhibition to the artist duo.
