Drums and Dreams
Five concerts in the Großer Saal of the Laeiszhalle.
Some people think that rhythm has something to do with pop music and not serious classical music. That is of course nonsense. Hardly anything is as electrifying as Ravel's »Bolero.« Even string sections can sound crisp and energetic when driven by pronounced percussion accents. And nowhere does the heat come to the boil more than in the percussion section of an orchestra. They have just about any sound at their fingertips, which they produce using wood, metal, plastic, paper, skins, vegetables or even fruit.
Leading exponents of the percussion scene are at the centre of this series, among them the legendary Evelyn Glennie and rising star Martin Grubinger. Further highlights include the passionately expressive pianists Katia and Marielle Labèque as well as Gabriela Montero who demonstrates how much percussive potential can be found in a good old- fashioned piano - even when not playing jazz.
