Season 2009/10

Elbphilharmonie Concerts 2009/10
Hear what's coming

Two and a half years prior to the opening of the new concert hall in Hamburg's HafenCity, the Elbphilharmonie already plays a pivotal role in the musical life of the city. At the Laeiszhalle and at 11 other locations in Hamburg, the Elbphilharmonie concerts give an excellent impression of the quality and scope of future programming: A full spectrum of musical variety spinning out from a classical core. The goals of excellence, innovation, and cosmopolitanism are at the centre of our urban music culture.

Season Highlights

Our three »Artists in Residence« give a personal flavour to the concert season 2009/10: Thomas Quasthoff demonstrates his versatility with six contrasting concerts, star viola-player Tabea Zimmermann has put together a chamber music cycle, and all-round talent Fazil Say pays hommage to the musical richness of his Turkish homeland with a special festival. We welcome the orchestras of Dresden and Birmingham at the Laeiszhalle with their respective chief conductors, Fabio Luisi and Andris Nelsons. To mark the end of the Haydn-Year, John Eliot Gardiner will conduct the »Creation«. In addition, a high profile concert series dedicated to percussion features such stars as Katia and Marielle Labèque, Gabriela Montero, Evelyn Glennie, and Martin Grubinger among others.

Cross-over projects are part of the Elbphilharmonie Concerts, presented in a series at Kampnagel: Leif Ove Andsnes presents a project developed with video artist Robin Rhode, Sasha Waltz & Guests teams up with Ensemble Modern, the US-group »Alarm Will Sound« interprets the work of Aphex Twin. Film legend John Malkovich stars in a evening of theatre with music at the Schauspielhaus. At the Church of St. Katharine stars such as Julia Fischer, Hilary Hahn, and Matthias Goerne perform the music of Johann Sebastian Bach. The legendary Hamburg Reeperbahn - in the city's historic red light district - is the location of an eight-day accordion festival, while Brad Mehldau, Jacky Terrasson, Yaron Herman, and Robert Glasper - four of today's most exciting jazz pianists - perform in the Kleiner Saal, the recital hall of the Laeiszhalle.

Further concert series are dedicated to chamber music (with Sabine Meyer, Janine Jansen, Viviane Hagner, Albrecht Mayer, and the Tetzlaff Quartett among others), to contemporary music, to young talent and, of course, to the majestic organ at the Laeiszhalle itself.

Subscriptions, festivals and special concerts

The Elbphilharmonie concerts are divided into 14 individual subscription series, ranging from a beginner's cycle (»Elbphilharmonie Concerts for Beginners«) to a gift subscription (»Das Große/Kleine Musikgeschenk«). There is also a subscription series of top orchestral concerts (»Nordic Concerts«), of intimate chamber music, a jazz series, and a children's concert series. Every single subscription guarantees entertaining and vivid encounters with music. Choose your favourite subscription from the list on the right. In addition to the above mentioned series, there are four special concerts (»Sonderkonzerte«), and three festivals to be found under »Festivals«: The Easter event »Hamburger Ostertöne«, the akkordion festival »Akkordeonist!« on the Reeperbahn, and the festival »Türkische Nächte« (Turkish Nights Concerts) by and with Fazil Say.
