Elbphilharmonie Pavilion

In the midst of Hamburg's so called »HafenCity« – straight across from the Elbphilharmonie – on the Magellan Terraces, stands the Elbphilharmonie Pavilion. It's a place where you can, today, already discover and listen to the Elbphilharmonie-of-tomorrow. The pavilion houses an exhibition about the spectacular new concert hall and musical life in Hamburg, as well as an impressive 1:10 acoustics model of the main hall of the Elbphilharmonie. The exhibition at the Elbphilharmonie Pavilion

On the ground floor of the pavilion you can visit a public exhibition. Large info-boards tell you more about the location of the Elbphilharmonie, its architecture and the building process so far. A second part of the exhibition is dedicated to the history of musical life in Hamburg and the future programmes of the concert hall, as well as its many artistic contributors. A special treat awaits those who wish to get a taste of our future concert life: on 20 headsets on the outer walls of the pavilion you can listen to the musical offerings Hamburg has in store for the future.

The 1:10-model of the main concert hall

On the first floor you can visit the 1:10 acoustics model of the main concert hall of the Elbphilharmonie. The Japanese acoustics specialist Yasuhisa Toyota built it to test and guarantee ideal acoustics in the planned concert hall.

To simulate an audience there are 2,000 little felt dolls seated in the model. Instead of an orchestra, little loudspeakers send from the stage sound waves which Toyota recorded at various spots in the model. By minimally changing the bent of the walls and ceilings in the model and by systematically breaking up the sound waves on different surfaces in the hall itself, the main hall has been »tuned.«

After the complicated process of »tuning« the hall was completed, the model is now on public display and on Tuesdays to Sundays, between 10 am and 5 pm, you can look at this large model yourself and get an impression of the dimensions of the new main concert hall of the Elbphilharmonie.

Renting the Pavilion

A special place for events is the all-glass upper floor of the pavilion, just beneath the impressive 1:10 acoustics model. You can use the approx. 80 square meters for conferences, lectures, readings or press conferences. Interesting facts about the Elbphilharmonie Pavilion

The pavilion is a cube made of steel and glass, designed by the architect Andreas Heller. In the centre of his purist project stands the acoustical model of the main concert hall. The pavilion was built by the ReGe Hamburg Projekt-Realisierungsgesellschaft mbH. The Elbphilharmonie pavilion is a joint project made possible by the combined efforts of the HamburgMusik gGmbH, the NDR, the HOCHTIEF Construction AG, and the Commerz Real AG.
