Kleiner Saal
At the turn of the century, when Hamburg's concert hall was in its planning phase, contemporary conductors and composers started performing chamber music more intensively. This development provided Hamburg and the Laeiszhalle with one of its most special concert venues. The »Kleiner Saal« was built for chamber concerts of instrumental and vocal works. Originally designed with 500 seats, now 639, it was described in the original architectural sketches as the »Quartettsaal«.
After World War II the original neo-baroque architecture and the glass ceiling corresponding to the Großer Saal were removed – the Kleiner Saal was »updated« to an intimate chamber music hall, primarily with wooden panelling. In the summer of 2009 the Kleiner Saal was once again renovated and restored to the original colours and texture of the Fifties.
